Professional BiographyDr Anna Negus is a specialist anaesthetist with a subspecialty in paediatric anaesthesia. Having completed her undergraduate training in the UK, she became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists whilst living in Auckland.
She then sub-specialised in paediatric anaesthesia, having completed Fellowships at Starship Hospital in Auckland, followed by the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and then on to Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth. Having always had an interest in real-world anaesthesia, Anna has completed a number of medical missions in developing countries. In 2012, she spent a year in the Pacific as a Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia at Fiji National University, Suva, before working in Nuku'Alofa, Tonga for a further 3 months. Subsequently, she has visited the Philippines for Op Smile and Madagascar for ADFA. She also visits the indigenous communities of WA to administer anaesthesia for children undergoing ENT surgery. In 2026, she completed her first mission with MSF in South Sudan. |
Paediatric AnaesthesiaAnna is a specialist paediatric anaesthetist. This is acknowledged as a result of the completion of two fellowships at international centres of excellence.
Anna has contributed to the literature in paediatric anaesthesia having authored and co-authored a number of articles. Clinical EducationGraduate Diploma in Clinical Education: University of Melbourne.

South Sudan 2026 Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

I recently had the privilege of working in South Sudan with MSF. I was initially based in Aweil, a town in the north-west of the country, bordering Sudan to the north. I was then moved to work in the eastern Jonglei region to help anaesthetise war-wounded as a result of escalating conflict. I worked with some incredible doctors, nurses and ancillary staff. The conditions for the people in South Sudan are extremely difficult. They are dealing with famine, economic hardship, environmental challenges, and a lack of access to basic medical care. I worked with an inspiring Anaesthetic nurse named Simon Both Jany. A young man who is facing displacement from his current home due to tribal conflict. He is planning on moving to safety with his family. He is eligible for asylum in Australia, but the pathway is long and uncertain. He has applied to undertakle further study in Ethiopia in order to hold a qualification which is transferable to Australia. He must retrain as a nurse as his current BSC in Anaesthesia from Ethiopia is not transferable. I am aiming to raise enough to fund Simon through his degree in Ethiopia. I am planning to hold a lecture series to share my experiences with MSF. I hope this will both raise awareness of the plight of the South Sudanese whilst helping raise funds for Simon and his family.
